A bottomless bargain in Mayfair: brunch at Mercante – Curious London

In short, the kind of the place where you expect to be ripped off, so we were surprised to find a two-course meal on offer for the suspiciously reasonable price of £15 (or three for £20).
Although Mercante manages to avoid that awful ‘hotel restaurant’ feel – you know, when the air is thick with the ghosts of people who paid £18 a head for a sub-par breakfast buffet – the place is still quite new and so relatively quiet.
Being a big ol’ basic bitch, I began with the avocado and eggs on toast with basil oil and an avalanche of zippy baby tomatoes so red they were almost lurid.
There was only one vegetarian option on the Secondi menu – baffling, as the Italians do veggie dishes so bloody well – and it had eggs in it, so Carla chose the only non-meat, eggless option on the menu for her first course.
I know it’s de rigueur in London to charge punters through the bumhole for puddings these days, so an extra fiver is relatively good value, but if you are the kind of person who prefers their puddings in door-stopper format you may be better off pottering over to Soho for a salted caramel biskie or sourdough doughnut.

Sat within the spectacular Park Lane Hotel in the bustling London area of Piccadilly, Mercante is a magnificent little eatery that offers all of the style and sophistication expected of a top restaurant in England’s capital city.

A divine introduction to any feast, the antipasti options available include such delights as the glorious meatballs in tomato sauce, a scrumptious collection of fried calamari, and the ultimate sharing platter of Artisan cured meats and Italian cheeses in the Mercante Board – any of which will serve to set the appetite up in style for one of the mouth-watering main courses to come.
Sat in between the idyllic settings of Hyde Park, Green Park and St. James’s Park, while also being just a stone’s throw away from such wondrous attractions as Westminster Abbey, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace, Mercante makes for a fine location in which to conclude a day of exploration.

In a nod to the hotel’s 90-year history, the 303-room hotel has been restored with redesigned guest rooms, art deco furnishings throughout and a new Italian restaurant, Mercante.
The restaurant has the look and feel that an Italian diner in the 1920s might have done, though perhaps slightly less chaotic and with a few more modern design features.
Light spills into the restaurant’s front dining room from French doors at the entrance, illuminating the room well and giving the impression that the space is larger than it is.
There are brightly coloured dining booths, armchairs and wooden tables, and on the walls, strands of dried chillies hang alongside black and white framed photographs of Italian street scenes.
Large cured hams hang from a metal rod next to the bar, and a wall at the back is plastered with vintage map wallpaper emphasising Italy and its surrounding islands.

Hotel restaurants don’t always scream character, but this laid-back Italian in the Sheraton on Piccadilly almost makes you forget you’re within stumbling distance of a few hundred quietly buzzing minibars.
Sitting somewhere between upscale deli-café and full-on restaurant, Mercante has a punchy, concise menu, allowing you to choose whether to snack or stuff yourself silly.
My waiter had even made the house limoncello himself, which was exciting to hear but came with a downside.
Call me naïve, but when a waiter offers you a limoncello ‘to try’, wouldn’t you expect it to be free?
Suddenly it felt like I was very much in a hotel – the sort that charges for wi-fi and punishes you for drinking over-priced mineral water in the middle of the night.
